RAPA NUI CHURCH

RAPA NUI CHURCH

Easter Island (Rapa Nui)
Project: 2013

AN OPEN CHURCH TO THE PEOPLE
A church is open to the people, an architecture that summons and accompanies the faithful from the exterior landscape to the space of religious worship, proposing a tour that invites the gathering and the mystical connection in a progressive and subtle way.
CALLING THE FAITHFUL
The church is born as part of the territory, as walls that emerge from the earth and grow to direct the faithful to the sacred space. This approach route is materialized by means of three roads, which refer to the three volcanoes of Rapa Nui, symbolically reflecting the will to summon the faithful from all parts of the Island.
A TRANSITION SPACE TOWARDS THE MYSTIC
The transition to the sacred space requires a process of mental preparation, acclimatization, and the architecture must facilitate and enhance this transition. The great roof of the church, with its changing and dynamic form, favors this progression towards reflection and spirituality thanks to a studied treatment of light and the scale of spaces.
